Owning Your Doctor’s Visit

What comes to mind when you think of going to the doctor? Long wait times, confusing words, barely seeing your doctor? Many times we play a passive role during our appointment. It’s time for us to take a stand and own our visit. The best way to do this is through preparation. In our video we discuss ways to prepare beforehand and during our doctor’s visit. We also cover ways for individuals with aphasia to get the most out of their time with their doctor.

Introduction & Role Play (0:00-2:21)

Doctor’s appointments may last over an hour with waiting and seeing the nurse, but the average time spent with the actual doctor is between 13-24 minutes. In this role play interaction the patient portrays feelings of uneasiness or confusion when speaking with the doctor. Sometimes medical jargon is used with patients. All too often, people may speak much too quickly to comprehend what they’re saying.
