Indoor Leisure Activities for Stroke Survivors

Leisure and recreational activities are important for helping to relieve stress, develop and maintain skills, express thoughts and emotions, and provide balance in life.

Reading and audiobooks are great recreational activities for increasing knowledge and relieving stress. Learn how to access audiobooks for free on your computer, phone, or tablet through the Kansas City Public Library.

Podcasts (5:20-8:41)

Podcasts are an audio program like talk radio. There are podcasts on many subjects and topics. They are a great way to learn about a subject that is interesting to you. This section includes ways to access free podcasts on your computer, phone, or tablet.

Games (8:42-9:00)

Board games, puzzles, and card games are a great way to work on motor skills, memory, and attention and are a fun way to spend time with friends and family.

Art (9:00-10:19)

Here are just a few of the many different forms of art we can engage in. Creating something meaningful can be empowering and help us to express emotions and creativity. Art provides opportunities to work on vision and motor skills.

Cooking/Baking (10:20-13:21)

Cooking and baking are great ways to spend time with loved ones, work on memory, attention, and motor skills. The American Stroke Foundation emails and instagram include many healthy recipes to try. This section includes a video demonstration on how to access the American Heart Associations website to find healthy recipes.

Exercise (13:22- 13:56)

Exercise is a great leisure activity that benefits our minds and bodies. Exercise can help improve balance, strength, endurance, and energy. ASF’s YouTube has many great workout videos to try.
