What can I expect?
The Next Step program is designed to advance your recovery process after stroke. We are a group-oriented wellness program where people support each other after stroke and develop healthy lifestyles. People first visit, obtain a physician’s release, complete an intake assessment, and then participate in a Next Step program at one of our sites. If you stay all day for programming, you are responsible for your own lunch. A monthly fee is charged for participating in the program. We ask you to complete periodic reassessments to measure progress.
We have community outings and holiday closures, so please check the monthly calendar to note days that sites are closed. For inclement weather conditions, we follow the closures of the school district for the site you are attending.
How Do I begin?
We want you to be sure that the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) is right for you so the first step is to come for a visit; sit in on a class or two and meet some of the stroke survivors. You will know after this visit if the Next Step program at ASF is where you want to be. In order to ensure that program staff are available to greet you, please schedule an appointment to visit by calling 913-649-1776 (this phone number will work for all our locations.)
Once you’ve decided that you would like to participate in our program and we have your physician release you may schedule an intake interview. Please call 913-649-1776 to set up an intake appointment. The interview lasts approximately one hour. Please bring emergency contact information to the intake appointment. After the intake interview, we will determine whether or not a caregiver will be required to attend with you. Caregivers are always welcome.
When can I start participating in the programs?
After your intake interview, you may begin right away. On your first day of programming be prepared to pay your first monthly payment.
Am I eligible to participate?
To participate in our programs all stroke survivors must be able to perform their own toileting and other personal care needs, be able to get their lunch and be safe in eating. If survivors are not independent in these areas of self-care, a caregiver must assist onsite. This is not an adult day care program, so people with advanced cognitive impairment are not eligible to participate.
To be eligible for our fitness and aquatic programs, you must have approval from a physician according to your release. If hospitalized, the release must be updated before resuming physical activity in our program.
Is there a cost to attend the program?
There is a monthly program fee for each participant. This allows participation in all classes and the fitness program, based on available appointments and eligibility. Please check with our administrative office (913-649-1776) for the latest program fee information.
Does Insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare cover any of the cost?
The American Stroke Foundation is a non-medical wellness facility and cannot bill insurance, Medicaid or Medicare.
What if I cannot afford to pay the program fee?
Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. If you require financial assistance you must complete a financial assistance application and provide the correct documentation. Contact 913-649-1776 to obtain a financial assistance application.
Does the American Stroke Foundation provide transportation?
The American Stroke Foundation does not provide transportation. Upon request, a list of transportation resources in the Kansas City area will be provided.
