Empowering survivors of stroke and their families to overcome the challenges of life after stroke

Community Highlight: Meet Kim! Kim’s favorite par Community Highlight: Meet Kim!

Kim’s favorite part of the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) is the sense of community it provides. She enjoys meeting new people, hearing their stories, learning from one another, and helping when she can. She is grateful for the therapists who have continually challenged and encouraged her to keep growing, as well as the exercise opportunities that allow her to push herself and continue improving.

Kim’s stroke journey started after a complication from a sinus surgery. Throughout her recovery, she has remained determined to keep moving forward, celebrating each milestone along the way, including returning to driving. Outside of ASF, Kim enjoys teaching a module she developed that covers diversity and inclusion and overcoming the obstacle of implicit bias. Teaching others continues to give her a strong sense of purpose and allows her to share her knowledge and passion.

Kim also enjoys taking evening walks with her wife, Regina, and trying new restaurants together. Through her recovery, Kim has developed an even deeper appreciation for gratitude, resilience, and kindness. She believes that everyone is fighting a battle others cannot see and encourages people to lead with compassion. Her message to other stroke survivors is “Never give up. Don’t let the hard days win because it gets better.”

More than 700 participants strolled the four-mile course on a glorious September day. The entire Blue Valley freshmen football team with Coaches Steve Rampy and Jeff Tupper, joined in the effort. Players like Luke Rampy and Jacob Tupper were especially pleased to help with the fundraising, as their grandfathers, Charles England and Keith Larimore are beneficiaries of the Stroke Foundation’s services.

Community Highlight: Meet Mike Mike never thought Community Highlight: Meet Mike

Mike never thought he'd make it through his stroke three years ago, but here he is today—and he'll be the first to tell you that he fought like crazy to regain the ability to do the things he loves. Mike credits his independence to his determination and motivation to get back to his normal daily routine.

He went from being a statistician with a degree in statistics and an MBA to relearning how to climb stairs on his own, dress himself, and do his laundry. Today, Mike is fully independent in all of those areas.

He's up at 4 or 5 every morning, walks half a mile three days a week, and lifts weights regularly. When he's not challenging himself physically, he's happiest hiking in the mountains, keeping his house clean, or spending time with his dog, Beau, who means the world to him.

Attending ASF was initially his wife's idea, and Mike admits it felt a little strange at first. But it didn't take long for the people and conversations to become something he genuinely needed and loved. He told us that the creative conversations have helped his brain more than he ever expected.

The advice Mike shared tells you everything you need to know about who he is and what he values: "Take it one day at a time, figure out what is important, and slow down and smell the flowers."
