Jerry has been attending the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) Next Step program for approximately 16 years! Jerry loves coming to ASF for the socialization and community of survivors. They really understand what he is going through. He also enjoys ASF for the exercise because it can be hard to stay motivated to get moving and it gives him a chance to get out of the house. It is easier to exercise when he has others around him and structured time to focus on working out.
Physical Fitness is important to maintaining health especially after a stroke. Physical Fitness activities give individuals the opportunity to increase physical fitness and prevent future strokes. Participants perform exercises that target the upper and lower body, improve balance, and improve endurance all within a monitored and safe environment.

Through Health Behaviors activities individuals are provided with the skills and information about stress management, remaining safe at home and in the community, dealing with change, and incorporating healthy food choices.

Communication difficulties are often encountered following a stroke. Communication activities provide an opportunity for individuals to improve speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills while having a normal conversation.

Following a stroke individuals may have difficulties thinking or using their arms and legs and must learn a new way to do daily activities. Life After Stroke activities focus on providing skills, strategies, and technology to deal with these changes. Additionally, this program supplies opportunities for individuals to be productive and active members of their community as they take their next steps in life.
