As an American Stroke Foundation (ASF) volunteer, your expertise and experience would be put to good use. Our Stroke Wellness Centers provide post rehabilitation group classes for survivors in a non-medical, non-clinical setting. Our goal is to encourage and promote positive outcomes for stroke survivors, caregivers, their families and friends. Our only requirement is your interest in helping stroke survivors achieve their goals. Here are some roles for volunteers:
Community Conversation Leader
Lead group of 5 – 10 stroke survivors in functional and daily communication activities like ordering from a menu, making small talk at a party, or discussing last night’s TV shows. Some people in the group may have language disorders that might make this type of communication difficult. If you’re a speech pathologist with some time to volunteer this is the ideal opportunity for you, if you’re not a speech pathologist, that’s fine – just bring your ideas.
Game Leader
Assist with dominoes, card games, Bingo and board game activities. These activities will assist stroke survivors in strengthening hand movement, memory, concentration, and provide social interaction. Games and materials will be provided. Volunteer should enjoy socializing and be full of laughs.
Wellness & Fitness Assistants:
Assist ASF Trainer in Wellness & Fitness Center. Volunteer will monitor blood pressure before, during, and after exercise session. Assist stroke survivors with exercise programs geared toward improving strength, balance, and aerobic condition on Nu Steps and treadmills.
Office Helper
We often need help to work on filing, cleaning, data entry or just answering the phones. If you like to interact with people on the phone this might be the job for you.
Fundraising Volunteer
Our annual Stroke Walk could not be held without the support of many volunteers. No matter what time of year it is we’re working on our next Walk, as well as other fundraising activities. There are many opportunities to help, including recruiting your own team, seeking sponsorships, marketing, logistics, etc.
